Verizon says LA County outage began after vandals cut multiple fiber lines, affecting mobile and home internet service

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Verizon customers throughout the Los Angeles County area reported an outage on Friday morning that affected their cellular and internet service, which the company said was caused by vandals.

“We are aware of an issue impacting some mobile and wireless home internet customers in the Southern California area,” Verizon said in a statement provided to ABC7. “Our engineers are engaged and we are working quickly to solve the issue. Please visit our Check Network Status page for updates on service in your area. We know how much people rely on Verizon and apologize for any inconvenience. We appreciate your patience.”

Verizon said some service has already been restored, and the provider is hopeful most of the service will be restored by midnight.

Customers said they were impacted in the San Fernando Valley and Santa Monica, among other areas.

In a follow-up statement, Verizon said, “Earlier this morning, multiple fiber cuts due to acts of vandalism caused service interruptions for some customers in Greater Los Angeles County.”

Contacted by ABC7, a Verizon spokesperson declined to identify the location where the fiber lines were cut, citing security reasons.

“These dangerous acts not only impact families, students, and businesses, they are a direct threat to the safety and security of Angelenos,” the statement said. “We know how much people rely on Verizon and we are actively working with community leaders on ways to stop these actions.”

Whether the outage impacted 911 service or other emergency communications was not immediately confirmed.
