Christian Bale’s Underrated Western Box Office Bomb Featuring Timothée Chalamet Is Leaving Netflix

Director Scott Cooper is gearing up for perhaps his biggest shot at a blockbuster, Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, the music biopic starring Jeremy Allen White as Bruce Springsteen. Before the film’s release, audiences will perhaps want to check out some of his previous work, which remains hit-or-miss. However, the most underrated film of his career has to be Hostiles, the Western that he made with Christian Bale and Rosamund Pike a few years ago. Hostiles is currently available to stream on Netflix, but not for much longer.

Originally released in 2017, the movie wasn’t successful at the box office. The movie made around $35 million worldwide, against a budget that has been reported to be as high as $50 million. Hostiles received mostly positive reviews, and is currently sitting at a 71% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “Hostiles benefits from stunning visuals and a solid central performance from Christian Bale, both of which help elevate its uneven story.”

Collider’s review at the time described the movie as “frustratingly languid” but praised Bale’s performance, adding that the movie provides “an unforgiving look at an unforgiving time filled with unforgiving people.” Perhaps its closest companion could be The Revenant, a similarly brutal Western starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy, which debuted to massive critical and commercial success only a couple of years prior.

‘Hostiles’ Features a Few Future Stars

Cooper first worked with Bale on the underrated drama Out of the Furnace, which also featured Casey Affleck and Woody Harrelson. More recently, they collaborated on the gothic horror film The Pale Blue Eye, which was released to positive reviews on Netflix. Also featuring Wes Studi, Ben Foster and Stephen Lang, along with appearances from three future stars, Jesse Plemons, Jonathan Majors, and Timothée Chalamet, Hostiles will leave Netflix in November. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
