Inside Stephen Fry’s marriage to husband Elliott after ‘sadness’ over not having children

Blackadder star Stephen Fry is among the cast taking part in Claudia Winkleman’s murder mystery gameshow, The Celebrity Traitors.

Comedy icon Stephen Fry is showing his more serious side on BBC One tonight as he takes part in the first series of The Celebrity Traitors.

The 68-year-old is battling it out against the likes of Kate Garraway, Clare Balding, David Olusoga and Alan Carr amongst other celebrities across nine captivating episodes.

The performer and wit is most famous for his parts in Blackadder, Jeeves and Wooster, Wilde and The Hobbit, and has also been open about his life and difficult upbringing.

He previously disclosed that he was thrown out of Uppingham School in Rutland during his A-levels for “various misdemeanours” and subsequently expelled from Paston School.

At his third institution, he failed his A-levels and later spent three months behind bars as a teenager for credit card fraud. Nevertheless, he was ultimately awarded a place at Queens’ College, Cambridge and became part of the Footlights – where his comedic journey took off.

The acclaimed star has led an extraordinary life, but confessed before the programme that he’s “never done anything like” The Celebrity Traitors.

“I just thought it would be a new experience. Everybody kept telling me it was a very good show and it sounded interesting,” he explained, reports the Mirror.

“I watched and I had to agree, I did think it was very good.”

But away from screens and his career, Stephen is happily married to comedian Elliott Spencer, who is 30 years younger, and the couple reside together in Norfolk. Here’s everything you need to know about his marriage ahead of Celebrity Traitors.

Who is Stephen Fry’s husband Elliott Spencer?

Stephen Fry has been wed to photographer and comedian Elliott Spencer since 2015.

Hailing from Southampton, Elliott, 38, works as a comedian, writer and photographer.

The pair first encountered each other at a friend’s home, with Stephen disclosing that he instantly knew Elliott was the one for him.

They wed in a private registry office ceremony in Norfolk, with the actor posting on X at the time: “Gosh. @ElliottGSpencer and I go into a room as two people, sign a book and leave as one. Amazing.”

Discussing their age difference, Stephen remarked on The Jonathan Ross Show that same year: “There is an age difference and I keep forgetting which way round it is but I think he’s younger than me … but I don’t mind.”

Meanwhile, Elliott also shared with press that year: “I don’t care what people think, Stephen is the love of my life, the light of my life.”

Earlier this year, Stephen offered a rare insight into his marriage, telling Rylan Clark on his podcast: “I can tell you how to have a successful relationship with Elliot, but that’s probably not very helpful.

“But I guess it’s all the normal human virtues – some of which are forgotten virtues – but one of the most important human virtues, I think, isn’t even really considered a virtue, but it is one that changes the world.”

He continued: “And it’s not kindness, which obviously is important, but it’s a subset of kindness, perhaps – and it’s cheerfulness. When you’re in the presence of a cheerful person, it makes everything better. They’re like their own sunshine. So that’s one of the things. If one is down, to help the other come up and understand each other’s differences as emotional human beings.

“For example, I had to understand, and he had to understand, that I am extremely energetic and bouncy and chatty in the mornings at breakfast and he is not. So I had to find ways of just calming myself and he had to come up a little bit and not be quite so kind of, ‘Will you shut up Stephen!'”

Stephen also disclosed that Elliott introduces him to things he’s unfamiliar with. “He introduced me to Kendrick Lamar, which was a great thing to do because Kendrick Lamar I’ve decided is a great poetical spirit, a really remarkable figure,” he said.

“But that plus, now you’re really going to laugh here because I thought, is he insane? He has a great affection for, and I guess you could call it ironic, but it’s real – for WWE.”

Whilst the pair haven’t had children, Stephen confessed to The Mirror a few years back that he’s discussed beginning a family with Elliott.

“There is a part of me that obviously feels in another world, if I’d timed things right, I might have had children.”

“I have many godchildren now, nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews, but I’ll never experience a child growing up. It’s a slight sadness,” he added.

“I mean, that’s probably the biggest hole in my life experience.”

The Celebrity Traitors continues tonight at 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
