What’s open, what’s closed in the Halifax area for Thanksgiving 2025

Here is a list of what’s open and closed in the Halifax area on Thanksgiving Monday:

Retail, groceries

Grocery stores like Sobeys, Walmart, Atlantic Superstore and Costco will be closed.

Dartmouth’s Gateway Meat Market will be open.

All NSLC stores will be closed.

The Halifax Shopping Centre, Mic Mac Mall and Sunnyside Mall will be closed.

Some pharmacies will be open.

Halifax Public Libraries

All branches will be closed.

Transit

Bus services will run on holiday schedules on Monday. Detailed holiday schedules by individual bus and ferry route can be found on the Halifax Transit website.

The first trip for the Alderney ferry service will depart the Alderney terminal at 7:30 a.m. and its last trip will depart the Halifax terminal at 11:45 p.m.

The Woodside ferry won’t operate Monday.

Waste collection

There will be no garbage, organics or recyclables collection on Monday.

The Otter Lake waste management facility and the municipal recycling facility will be closed on Monday.

Recreation

Many municipally operated recreation facilities will be closed on Monday, excluding the Sackville Sports Stadium. Residents should contact their local recreation centre for operating hours and program information.

Parking

On-street paid parking will be free on Monday.

311 citizen contact centre

The 311 contact centre will be closed for full-service requests on Monday, but urgent calls can still be reported. Regular operations will resume on Tuesday.
