Columbus sisters ready to run half marathon together despite rain forecast

With less than 48 hours until the Columbus half and full marathons kick off at North Bank Park, runners are gearing up for the challenge, rain or shine.’

Sisters Rachel Jackson and Natalie Siefert are particularly excited, as this will be their first time running the half marathon together in their hometown.

“I might get emotional just because we were born and raised in Columbus, and we run trails all around Columbus, and it’s just gonna be really special to run with her,” Jackson said.

Siefert, who took up running only a few years ago, expressed her enthusiasm: “She was always the like runner growing up and I just got into running a few years ago, so it’s gonna be fun to finally be able to do it with her.”

Despite the forecast of rain, the sisters are preparing for the 13.1-mile race. “I’m just trying to think positive and hope it’s a light rain Sunday morning, but definitely gonna wear a hat, hopefully some nice warm socks keep our toes warm,” Jackson said.

Race Director Darris Blackford assured that the event is ready for any weather conditions.

“We’re gonna start the race under yellow conditions, which is green, yellow, red, and black,” Blackford explained. “Yellow is really just, be cautious.”

Blackford added that the expected light rain and temperatures are ideal for running and walking. Runners will be kept updated on conditions via social media and the marathon’s push texting system.

Participants are focusing on the fun and community spirit of the event.

“Go out and have fun and cross the finish line,” one runner advised. Another runner noted, “It just is a blast, the community comes together, people are out in the streets cheering.”

The half and full marathons are set to begin Sunday at 7:30 a.m.
