James Madison took the lead for the first time early in the fourth quarter and held off visiting Louisiana last week for a 24-14 victory. Alonza Barnett III threw his third touchdown pass of the day to Landon Ellis, a four-yard play that put the Dukes up 21-14 with 12:33 remaining. The two hooked up for JMU’s first score in the second quarter and combined on a 62-yard TD on the first play from scrimmage of the second half. Barrett was 26-of-40 for 290 yards while Wayne Knight ran for 111 yards on 20 attempts. Ellis finished with six receptions for 120 yards.
Old Dominion fell to 1-1 in the SBC last week with a 48-24 loss at Marshall. Boogie Trotter gave the Monarchs a 7-0 lead late in the fourth quarter with a 22-yard pick-six before the Thundering Herd responded with 24 straight points. Colton Joseph threw a touchdown pass and ran for another, but was intercepted twice while Maurki James picked up 83 yards and a score on 12 carries.
James Madison has won the last three meetings to take a 3-2 lead in the series, taking a 35-32 win at Old Dominion last November.
