Wisconsin great Barry Alvarez reacts to the Badgers’ historic home loss to Iowa

Wisconsin great Barry Alvarez offered his reaction to the Badgers’ recent home loss to Iowa.
The longtime Wisconsin coach and athletic director was recently in the news after calling fans spoiled rotten for booing the team during its 27-10 home loss to Maryland in Week 4. During his weekly appearance on ESPN Madison, Alvarez said:
“This is about pride. I mean, you’re playing on a team, and you go out and play like that. Everybody in that stadium saw a lack of effort. To have Iowa put the game away in the first quarter. Give me a break.”
Alvarez continued the line of thought, focusing on the team’s poor showing during the 37-0 loss.
“I hate to be critical. But if anybody is upset with that, go look at the film. This is not us being critical; it’s us being honest. Look at what happened. We saw it firsthand, then watched the replay and saw it again.”
Here is the full conversation, with comments from former Wisconsin center Derek Engler (1994-96).
The 2025 Badgers are 2-4 (0-3 Big Ten) following their blowout loss to the Hawkeyes. Engler hinted at the team’s outlook; it faces three of the top eight teams in the country over the next month, including a home contest against No. 1 Ohio State on Saturday.
Wisconsin fans, including Alvarez, hope the team will fare better against the top-ranked Buckeyes than it did against the rival Hawkeyes. Otherwise, conversations surrounding the program’s future will persist.
