Jon Gruden preparing to return to coaching amidst college rumors

We aren’t even through the month of October, and the coaching carousel is already starting to churn at a rapid rate in the college football world. The speed picked up this past weekend, with the likes of James Franklin, Trent Dilfer, and Trent Bray joining the ranks of the unemployed after getting let go from their respective schools.
Now, as a handful of programs look to fill the void at the top of their organizational charts, a long list of potential candidates has been thrown about for various positions.
Among those potential candidates appears to be former NFL star coach Jon Gruden.
After coaching for five different NFL teams over a 29-year span, Gruden has been out of the coaching ranks for several years now, growing his media brand and working most recently with Barstool Sports. However, he said on Friday that he is open to returning to coaching, even at the college level, and is always prepared for that change to take place.
“I absolutely love football,” Gruden said on Friday’s episode of ‘Pardon My Take’. “Who knows what will happen, but I’m preparing myself as always to coach. But, behind the scenes, we’re getting plenty of football. I promise you.”
Gruden most recently served as a head coach with the Oakland Raiders from 2018 to 2021, but he ultimately resigned after a controversial email scandal unfolded. Before that, he spent time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, winning a Super Bowl in 2003. The last time Gruden coached at the college level was in 1991 as the tight ends coach for the Pittsburgh Panthers.
Before the season is over, there are bound to be more openings at the head coaching ranks in college, and Gruden’s name will likely be thrown around as a strong candidate. Whether or not he ends up taking one of those jobs remains to be seen.
