Marty Domres, CBA alum and Greater Syracuse Sports hall of famer who succeeded Johnny Unitas as Colts QB, has died

Syracuse, N.Y. —Marty Domres, a former star athlete at Christian Brothers Academy and member of the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame, has died.

He was 78 years old.

Domres excelled in football, basketball and baseball at CBA, graduating in 1965 as a member of seven championship teams.

His athleticism earned him multiple scholarship offers.

Domres chose Columbia University where he set 15 school records and two national marks for passing and total offense and was selected first-team all Ivy League quarterback. His career with the Lions earned induction into the Columbia University Sports Hall of Fame.

The San Diego Chargers selected Domres in the first-round of the 1969 NFL Draft as the ninth overall pick.

The Baltimore Colts signed Domres in 1972 where he became the successor to Hall of Fame quarterback Johnny Unitas.

Domres also played for the San Francisco 49ers and New York Jets before retiring from football in 1978.

Domres finished with 4,904 yards on 399-for-809 passing and 27 touchdowns in 90 NFL games.

Domres settled in Baltimore after his NFL career and worked in finance.

He is survived by his wife Cheryl Domres, step-son Christian Cummings and his sisters Cindy Domres, Barbara Rehberg, and Nancy Flattery.

A memorial service for Domres will be held at St Joseph Parish, 100 Church Lane, Cockeysville, MD on Thursday, October 30, 2025 at 11 a.m.
