Charges: Man allegedly started Minneapolis house fire that left 1 dead

Charges have been filed against a man for allegedly starting a fire that killed one person in Minneapolis last week.
Andrew John Nietz, 41, is facing one count of second-degree murder and one count of first-degree arson.
As previously reported, on Sept. 24, Minneapolis fire crews responded to a house fire on the 900 block of 22nd Avenue Northeast just before 11:20 p.m. One man was found dead inside, and three other people were displaced.
According to court documents, Minneapolis police learned from residents of the multi-unit building that they saw a man, later identified as Nietz, at the victim’s residence.
Witnesses said that Nietz had previously threatened the victim multiple times, including some threats to burn the house down.
One witness said he saw Nietz at the victim’s unit at about 8:30 p.m. on the night of the fire. The witness added that Nietz and the victim would often fight when they drank together.
Multiple witnesses told authorities that they saw smoke and flames coming from the victim’s unit and that the victim’s vehicle had been parked outside the building before the fire, but was missing afterwards.
The criminal complaint says that investigators talked to the victim’s mother, also the owner of the building, who said that Nietz and her son had been friends growing up, but had a history of physically fighting each other. She said she previously rented a room to Nietz but had to evict him due to drug use.
The victim’s car was found in Minneapolis the next morning, and during a traffic stop, the driver was identified as Nietz. Location data from Nietz’s phone showed that it was at the victim’s home from 8:06 p.m. until the time of the fire.
Court records note that Nietz has two prior convictions for arson — one for starting a fire at Mall of America in 2012 and another for starting a trash can on fire at MSP Airport in 2023.
Nietz is currently being held at the Hennepin County jail on a probation violation. His first court appearance is set for Monday.
