Betsey stays hot

Still a lot of up=-and-down and a lot of 3-point shots going up. That’s a good style for Tyler Betsey, who has made his first 3-pointers.

Florida State leads 23-22 with 11:16 remaining. Syracuse has taken 9 from behind the arc, while Florida State has tried 6.

Orange might be falling into FSU’s trap a little bit in taking a lot from behind the 3-point arc.

Not much defense, lots of Freeman

Not a whole lot of defense from the two teams early.

Combine that with Florida State’s preferred pace and the Seminoles leading 15-14 with 14:32 remaining in the first quarter.

Syracuse trailed 11-3 at one point but seemed to regain its footing.

Donnie Freeman looks like he’s going to continue his stretch of strong play. He’s got 6 points already. Florida State doesn’t look like it has a match for him.

Pregame

Starting lineup for Florida State: Thomas Bassong, Chauncey Wiggins, Alier Maluk, Cody Magee and Rovert McCray V.

Starting lineup for Syracuse: Donnie Freeman, Will Kyle III, Nate Kingz, JJ Starling and Naithan George.

The Syracuse men’s basketball team is looking to for its third consecutive win when it hosts the Seminoles on Tuesday.

The Orange (11-5, 2-1 ACC) has started league play with a stretch of solid performances that has been highlighted by the healthy return — and impressive numbers — from forward Donnie Freeman.

In Syracuse’s wins over Georgia Tech and Pittsburgh, Freeman has averaged 24.5 points per game, seven rebounds and shot an efficient 54.8 percent from the floor.

Florida State (7-9, 0-3) has struggled in its first year under head coach Luke Loucks.

The Seminoles have gone all-in on 3-point shooting and are currently taking 35.3 per game, more than any team in the country other than Alabama.

That seems like a good matchup for Syracuse, which has been excellent at defending the 3-point arc, as detailed by our Donna Ditota.

The Seminole strategy isn’t working particularly well, as FSU is connecting on just 31.7 percent.

Guard Robert McCray V leads the way for Florida State averaging 13.7 points per game, while guard Kobe McGee is the team’s leader in 3-pointers made and averages 10.9 points per game.

Syracuse’s top football recruit, Calvin Russell, will be in uniform for the men’s basketball team for the first time. He arrived on campus within the past week.

While Syracuse has had a number of excellent dual-sport athletes over the course of its history, Russell is likely the first football-first athlete who will be making their initial appearance with the basketball team.
