Calgary named one of the coolest cold-weather cities in Canada

Living in Calgary is a treat, and one publication just selected our city as one of the coolest cold-weather cities in Canada.

Australian newspaper The West Australia published its list of the coolest cold-weather cities in Canada, and knowing how Calgarians embrace the chillier winter months, it’s no surprise that the city nabbed such a ranking.

The newspaper, which is the second-oldest continuously produced newspaper in Australia, tapped six Canadian cities that do winter like no other, and Calgary made the cut.

The publication stated that Calgary is a “genuinely good cold-weather city in its own right, and it also happens to be the gateway to Canada’s top winter playground,” thanks to nearby Canmore and Banff National Park.

Our sunny days and chinooks are also mentioned as helping winter seem more approachable, allowing people to get out and enjoy the season, rather than being cooped up inside battling frigid temperatures.

Speaking of ways that make winter easy and enjoyable in our city, we’ve rounded up seven things that make winter in Calgary spectacular, five festivals to look forward to this winter, and six of the best free things to do in Calgary this winter.

Our pals up in Edmonton did not land on the list, which is a bit of a surprise, considering the return of the iconic Ice Castles event and Chiseled, Edmonton’s annual ice carving competition, among other icy events that go on during the winter months in YEG.
