Greek growers affected as greenhouses smashed by winds

Crete is facing severe weather as strong, gusty winds sweep across the island, causing significant damage to crops and greenhouses. The storm, which began early Wednesday, has disrupted daily life and prompted safety measures in several communities.
According to Greece’s National Meteorological Service, winds in parts of the island have reached up to 9 on the Beaufort scale, making conditions particularly hazardous. The area around Ierapetra has been especially hard hit, with numerous greenhouses reporting extensive structural damage.
Local growers report heavy losses as wind and cold weather have destroyed parts of greenhouse operations and outdoor crops. The storm adds to ongoing challenges for the region’s agricultural sector, which relies heavily on greenhouse cultivation for key produce.
