Tom Cruise’s $381 Million Sci-Fi Masterpiece Without a Sequel Stages a Streaming Takeover

Tom Cruise’s first original movie in almost 10 years will hit theaters later this year, and fans are rushing to check out another of his original classics on streaming. 12 years ago, Cruise starred alongside Emily Blunt (The Smashing Machine) and Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin) in Edge of Tomorrow, the legendary sci-fi epic that still has fans demanding a sequel to this day. Edge of Tomorrow is streaming on HBO Max globally, where it’s in the top 10 in several countries. It’s also charting in the VOD top 10 around the world on Apple TV.
Edge of Tomorrow is, unfortunately, not streaming anywhere in America. However, considering its rising global popularity, it is likely to return to one of the major streaming services in the United States soon. The film follows Cage (Cruise), a man who gets trapped in a time loop, living the same day over and over again upon his death. The human race is caught in a war against aliens, and this time loop is the key to stopping the war once and for all. Edge of Tomorrow is hailed as one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time, but it didn’t perform at the box office as well as you might think.
Warner Bros. spent $178 million on the making of Edge of Tomorrow, and the film grossed $381 million at the global box office. This is enough to avoid being branded a flop, but not enough to become a massive financial success. The film earned strong marks of 91% from critics and 90% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Christopher McQuarrie wrote the script for Edge of Tomorrow with John Henry and Jez Butterworth, and Doug Liman directed the film.
When Does Tom Cruise’s Next Movie Come Out?
Tom Cruise’s next movie, Digger, is set for release in theaters on October 2 later this year. The film also stars Emma D’Arcy (House of the Dragon) and Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler), and it follows the most powerful man in the world who sets out to save humanity from a disaster he intentionally caused. Alejandro G. Iñárittu, famed for his work on The Revenant, is directing the film. Cruise most recently spearheaded the final installment in his legendary action franchise, Mission: Impossible. He’s also working on another Top Gun movie that’s yet to be dated.
Be sure to check out Edge of Tomorrow on VOD platforms like Prime Video in America, and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
