Widespread heavy snow developing across CNY

The heavy snow has arrived this morning across the southern tier and is currently tracking north as of 8am Sunday.

This heavy snow will arrive by late morning and early after for much of the region and bring widespread travel impacts into Monday. The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings for the entire state through 7PM Monday.

Winter storm warning in effect till 7PM Monday

Frigid morning temperatures with wind chills currently sitting between -5 and -10 are being experienced. Warming slightly into the low teens this afternoon with wind gusts ranging 20-25mph this afternoon. Expect this breeze to contribute to the difficult travel conditions as blowing and drifting snow is likely. Light to moderate morning snow showers will turn heavy by this afternoon with snowfall rates between 1-2″ per hour between 2PM Sunday and 12AM Monday.

By 4PM this afternoon snowfall totals will be the highest across the southern portion of New York with 6-12″ already on the ground. In Syracuse by 4PM we’ll likely be around the 6″ mark with slightly less the further north you go.

4PM Sunday snowfall totals forecast

By 6am Monday morning widespread snowfall totals between 12-18″ are likely. Isolated totals over 18″ are possible across the higher elevations of the southern hills and southern tier. Notice the area of white, I’d expect these areas to be very close to that 12″ threshold.

6 AM Monday morning snowfall totals forecast

Lake effect snow develops behind this main system Monday afternoon with additional snowfall possible overnight into Tuesday morning. Expect daily snow showers through the week ahead with a couple inches possible each day.
