Pierce Brosnan does not want a new James Bond: the actor agrees to return for a new 007 film

Daniel Craig’s successor remains undecided. Amazon MGM’s new management has yet to reveal the name of the chosen actor, despite rumors. Rumors, incidentally, point to a clear favorite despite criticism from fans. The only person who has spoken publicly is Pierce Brosnan.

The actor, who has already played 007, has made clear his intention to return for a new film. He would do so as a “retired James Bond,” he told GQ Magazine. It doesn’t look like the production company’s top brass will go along with him, since with a new Bond, his story arc is back to square one.

Pierce Brosnan, the 007 who brought the agent back after the Cold War

Brosnan’s era is remembered for its balance between tradition and modernity, and for defining an iconic Bond, closely linked to the popular imagination of the late 1990s and early 21st century.

The actor joined James Bond at a key moment for the franchise. After a six-year hiatus and the end of the Timothy Dalton era, the saga needed to be redefined for a new geopolitical and audiovisual context. His debut in GoldenEye (1995) not only marked the return of Agent 007 to the big screen, but also a conscious update of the character for the post-Cold War era.

Brosnan embodied an elegant and charismatic Bond, a direct heir to Sean Connery’s refinement and Roger Moore’s sophisticated humor, but with a distinctly contemporary sensibility. GoldenEye (1995) was a critical and commercial success that revitalized the franchise, supported by modern staging and a villain with strong personal ties to the protagonist. The film cemented Brosnan as an effective Bond in action and powerful in identity.

With Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), the saga opted for a faster pace and a theme focused on the power of the media and information manipulation, anticipating debates that are commonplace today. The World Is Not Enough (1999) delved into the emotional dimension of the character, exploring his vulnerability and his difficulty in separating duty from feelings, especially in his relationship with Elektra King, played by actress Sophie Marceau.
