Syracuse dropped a 72-59 decision to No. 18/17 Virginia on Saturday afternoon at John Paul Jones Arena, unable to complete a late-game comeback despite an exceptional shooting performance from Naithan George.
George paced all scorers with 19 points on 8-of-9 shooting from the field. Seniors Nate Kingz and J.J. Starling each added 13 points for the Orange. Senior William Kyle III registered a career-high four blocks in an ACC game on the defensive end.
Virginia connected on 10 three-pointers, the most Syracuse has surrendered to an ACC opponent this season. Sam Lewis topped the Cavaliers with 16 points, including four shots from beyond the arc.
The Orange trimmed the deficit to four points at 61-57 with 5:10 remaining following a 7-2 run. But the offense went cold, enduring a scoring drought of more than two and a half minutes as Virginia pushed the lead back to 65-57. A driving layup by Kingz with 2:34 left marked Syracuse’s final field goal. Chance Mallory responded with a three-pointer for Virginia, and the Cavaliers closed out the contest on a 7-0 run.
Syracuse opened with energy as Starling and George combined to stake the Orange to an early 8-4 advantage. Virginia countered with a 12-0 surge to take a 16-8 lead. The Orange clawed back from a 12-point first-half deficit, using a 17-5 run to even the score at 33-33 with 3:20 left before intermission. Virginia scored in the closing moments to carry a 38-35 edge into halftime.
George tallied 13 points on perfect 5-for-5 shooting in the first half, while Starling contributed 10 points. Virginia controlled the glass 38-28.
