BROKAW: ‘The Last Thing He Told Me’ finally returns for its sophomore season

After over two years of waiting, the fans of “The Last Thing He Told Me” are now able to continue the saga of Hannah and Bailey, as their lives are once again thrown into chaos due to the Campano Mafia family.
For the last five years Hannah (Jennifer Garner) and her stepdaughter Bailey (Angourie Rice) have been living a rather normal life. In the first season Hannah and Bailey were caught up in a drama of life and death as Owen Michaels (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), Hannah’s husband, abruptly left leaving a cryptic note instructing her to look after Bailey. As they uncovered pieces to the puzzle, they were finally able to renew their peaceful lives without Owen. Hannah, however, always suspected Owen would return, and return he does.
Now, Owen is back and there are even more mysteries to unravel as Hannah and Bailey find their lives in turmoil with the Campano mob family hunting them down to get to Owen, the man they want to kill. During the course of this season, the past relationships between the mafia family and the Michaels’ slowly comes to light as the head of the Campano organization (John Noble), is forced to confront the evils that have been committed in his name.
Nicholas Bell (David Morse), Owen’s father-in-law, returns with an interesting storyline. His dealings with the crime family as their attorney throughout the decades, comes into play. Relationships, old and new, are scrutinized and family and friendship are at the top of everyone’s minds.
The vendetta against Owen threads itself through all the characters as they maneuver their way toward answers with the ultimate goal of Owen, Bailey, and Hannah once again being a family, able to freely live their lives.
Others joining the cast this season are Rita Wilson as Hannah’s carefree mother who abandoned her when she was a child, and Judy Greer as Quinn, the daughter of the mafia family who did everything she could to distance herself from them, but in the end things change as she and her father rekindle their relationship.
As Hannah and Bailey find themselves tied more securely to Nicholas, the unraveling of past secrets come to light. And, to make things a little more complicated, once Bailey learns of the friendship between her late mother and Quinn, she sets out on a dangerous path to uncover her mother’s past and what led to her death. This aspect alone adds another dimension to the entire story.
The first season was based on the Laura Dave novel “The Last Thing He Told Me” and the second season is based on her sequel “The First Time I Saw Him.”
Season 2 of “The Last Thing He Told Me” began streaming on Apple TV Plus, February 20, with each of the episodes dropping weekly on the streaming channel. For those who enjoyed the first season, the second season will add just as much intrigue, intense characters, and plenty of drama, leading to a cliffhanger suggesting a third season is under consideration.
