Kate Middleton Chooses Her Go-To Lover’s Knot Tiara for the Nigerian State Banquet

For the first state banquet of the year, Kate Middleton opted for one of her favorite jewels: The Lover’s Knot tiara. She paired it with a high-neck, flowing green dress from Andrew Gn—a nod to the Nigerian flag—and a sash that featured her royal orders, including the Royal Family Order of King Charles III.
She also wore Queen Elizabeth II’s earrings.

Sometimes referred to as the Cambridge Lover’s Knot, the tiara was created for Queen Mary in 1914 by the House of Garrard from pearls and diamonds already owned by her family. Mary modeled after her grandmother Princess Augusta of Hesse’s headpiece, the original Cambridge Lover’s Knot Tiara, which is currently thought to be held in an unknown private collection.
Tonight marks the Princess of Wales’s 20th time wearing a tiara since marrying into the British royal family. While she frequently has favored the Lover’s Knot tiara, since becoming Princess of Wales, she has switched it up a bit more, choosing the Strathmore Rose tiara at a banquet for South Korea in 2023 and Queen Victoria’s Oriental Circlet Tiara this past December at a banquet celebrating Germany.
This morning, Kate also leaned into diplomatic dressing in an outfit by British Nigerian designer Tolu Coker, a nod to both the UK and the visiting Nigerian president and First Lady. She paired the outfit with Princess Diana’s Collingwood Pearl Earrings, accessories that Diana wore frequently throughout her life.

Coker founded her eponymous sustainable luxury fashion label in 2021, and the brand is inspired “by the duality of the designer’s British-Nigerian heritage, family history of social activism and passion for social change.”
