‘What Happens at Night’ First Look: Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence Descend Into Martin Scorsese’s Frozen Dreamscape
Bundle up: Apple Original Films has revealed the first image from its latest Martin Scorsese-directed feature, the thriller “What Happens at Night,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. The film is currently in production in the Czech Republic and does not yet have a release date set. Scorsese and DiCaprio both shared the first look image on their respective social media accounts on Thursday morning.
Scorsese is directing and producing the film, which screenwriter Patrick Marber has adapted from Peter Cameron’s novel of the same name. Patricia Clarkson, Jared Harris, Mads Mikkelsen, and Welker White also star.
Cameron’s novel was released in 2020, and per publisher Catapult Books, it follows “an unnamed American couple travels to a strange, snowy European city to adopt a baby. It’s a difficult journey that leaves the wife, who is struggling with cancer, desperately weak, and her husband worries that her illness will prevent the orphanage from releasing their child.”
When the couple arrives in said strange city, its synopsis continues, they check into “the cavernous and eerily deserted Borgarfjaroasysla Grand Imperial Hotel where the bar is always open and the lobby populated with an enigmatic cast of characters ranging from an ancient, flamboyant chanteuse to a debauched businessman to an enigmatic faith healer. Nothing is as it seems in this baffling, frozen world, and the more the couple struggles to claim their baby, the less they seem to know about their marriage, themselves, and life itself.”
The new film is the latest collaboration between Scorsese, DiCaprio, and Apple Original Films, following their lauded “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Lawrence is no stranger here either, as she’s worked with Apple Original Films on films like “Causeway” and “Bread & Roses,” along with her upcoming murder mystery film “The Wives,” which she will star in and also produce.
Scorsese’s involvement was first announced in 2023. While Scorsese and DiCaprio have long enjoyed a very fruitful partnership, the film marks the first time Lawrence has worked with the filmmaker (and only the second time she’s starred alongside DiCaprio!).
