The adventures of Charlie and Pim come to a close this weekend.

The popular adult cartoon “Smiling Friends” will be ending its three-season run in a few days, as the show’s creators Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack announced in late February of this year.

“After we finished season three, Zach and I just both had the same feeling where we felt pretty burnt out after putting years and years into this, but also pretty accomplished,” Cusack, who also voices Pim, said. “We just came to this feeling where we’re like, ‘I think that could just be it.'”

Hadel, who voices Charlie, said that he didn’t want the series to overstay its welcome or turn into drivel solely for media consumption. The duo also didn’t want to hand over the show to someone else, as it’s so uniquely them.

And so, the last two episodes are about to air.

When will the last two episodes of ‘Smiling Friends’ air

“There’s also going to be two extra episodes of Smiling Friends coming out, that we’ve completed, coming out on April 12,” Cusack said.

The last two episodes of “Smiling Friends” will air April 12 at 11 p.m. Eastern Time, according to the show’s Final Episodes trailer. It’ll be broadcast on Adult Swim, which is the same channel as Cartoon Network.

The two episodes will be available on HBO Max to stream on April 13.

According to the Adult Swim schedule, the last two episodes are called “Friend-Bot (Version 12589218731809213528796879521)” and Charlie’s Uncle Dies and Doesn’t Come Back”

The voice actor for Charlie said the two episodes are not finales and are not thematically related, just the last two episodes of season three.

However, they do mark the end of “Smiling Friends” for now.

What is ‘Smiling Friends’ about?

“Smiling Friends” is an absurdist animated comedy about a group of people working at Smiling Friends Inc., a company that helps people smile. It has the usual hallmarks of an Adult Swim show of foul language and violence, however it freshens up the formula with off-beat humor and varied use of animation techniques like rotoscoping and stop-motion.

It follows Pim, Charlie, Allan, Glep, and the company owner, Mr. Boss, as they get into bizarre and surreal encounters. Save for their individual eccentricities, the characters themselves are all relatively normal, except for Mr. Boss, and the comedy of each episode comes from their reactions to a strange and nonsensical world.

The show’s first episode was shown to the public in April of 2020. Consistently featured on HBO Max’s top 10 shows, “Smiling Friends” currently holds a 93% popularity score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The decision to end the show came as a shock to its fans, who were not expecting “Smiling Friends” to end after three seasons, especially after reports that Adult Swim had approved at least two more seasons.

Cusack said that Adult Swim was very receptive about this choice and said that they would not force the duo to make more “Smiling Friends” and that the choice was up to them.

“We could come back in the future and make more episodes if we want,” Cusack said.
