Bayern Munich 4-3 (6-4 agg.) Real Madrid: German giants triumph in goal bonanza

Bayern Munich are headed to the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League after Harry Kane, Luis Diaz and Michael Olise all scored brilliant goals to eliminate 15-time European champions Real Madrid on Wednesday.

The score was 2-1 to Bayern after the first leg in Madrid last week, but it was 2-2 after just 35 seconds in Bavaria as Arda Guler scored his first career Champions League goal from a terrible giveaway by Manuel Neuer in the 1st minute. Neuer was five yards outside his box when he passed the ball straight to Guler, who quickly lobbed it home from 40 yards. Five minutes later, Bayern were back on top after Aleksandar Pavlovic headed home a corner kick from fewer that 40 inches.

Guler leveled the tie once again with a sublime free kick (and a bit of help from Neuer) in the 29th minute, but Kane struck a beauty to put Bayern back in front in the 38th. His wasn’t the last goal before halftime, though, because Kylian Mbappe scored four minutes later to make it 3-2 on the night and 4-4 on aggregate. The next big moment came in the 86th minute, when Eduardo Camavinga was shown a second yellow card and sent off 24 minutes after subbing into the game.

Camavinga was responsible for holding down the fort in midfield, and it all came crashing down as soon as he was sent off. Diaz found far too much space on the edge of the box and smashed the winner inside the far post in the 89th minute. Olise did the same from the other side in the 93rd, as he pinged a left-footed snap shot off the inside of the post and in to seal the deal.

Bayern will face reigning champions PSG, who defeated Liverpool 4-0, in the semifinals beginning on April 28 with the first leg in Paris and the second in Munich.

Luis Diaz and Harry Kane scored just five minutes apart either side of halftime as Bayern looked like one of the very best sides in Europe this season, but Mbappe’s goal left it all to play for in the second leg. Real Madrid expect to win the Champions League every season (hello, 15 European trophies), but this year they need it more than most as they trail rivals Barcelona by nine points in La Liga’s title race, while they are already out of the Copa del Rey (at the hands of second-division side Albacete) and they were beaten by Barca in the Spanish Super Cup.

Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid prediction

Kane will score at least once (and probably assist another), which means Madrid are going to need a boatload of goals. For some reason, this just doesn’t have the feel of a classically dominant Real Madrid side of yesteryear. Bayern Munich 3-2 (5-3 agg.) Real Madrid.
