Nine engines at scene of ‘significant fire’ at former town middle school

Residents have been ‘strongly advised’ to avoid the site of a ‘significant fire’ at a former town middle school.
The fire service was alerted to the incident at the former Parkway Middle School, in Park Road, Haverhill, at 8.20pm.
Crews from the town, Wickhambrook, Bury St Edmunds, Woodbridge and Orford were dispatched, with nine fire engines at the scene at first; by 9.35pm, 12 engines were in attendance, with crews from Sudbury, Mildenhall, Newmarket and Long Melford joining.

A spokesperson said: “Multiple fire stations have crews in attendance at a significant building fire, with the public asked to avoid the area.
“Residents are advised to keep their windows and doors shut.”
The fire service has received more than 60 calls from members of the public.
The spokesperson requested residents allow emergency services clear access to the scene and follow any instructions from police or fire crews on site.
The school, which shut in 2011, was formerly the head office of Unity Schools Partnership, which is now based in Homefield Road.
In an update at 9.46pm, the spokesperson added the public was ‘strongly advised’ to avoid the area, while nearby residents should continue to keep their doors and windows closed.
