Newfoundland and Labrador artists had a strong presence at the East Coast Music Awards this year, taking home eight awards.
Kellie Loder was dubbed songwriter of the year for the second time, after initially taking the category in 2023.
Winning for a second time is “kind of bewildering” and less nervewracking, Loder told CBC Radio’s The St. John’s Morning Show on Tuesday.
“You’re not as shocked the second time you get it,” said Loder, who noted they’re very proud of the record they submitted.
“First time, I was completely gobsmacked. The second time I was like, ‘oh I deserve this award just like anybody else in this category.’ So I’m going to go up there and try to accept it with some grace and a little bit of humour.”
The ECMAs were held in Sydney, N.S. from May 20 to 24.
John Hutton honoured
The Majestic Theatre in downtown St. John’s was crowned venue of the year, after reopening in 2023.
The late John Hutton won a Stompin’ Tom Award, which recognizes people who have made a long-term contribution to the east coast music industry.
Hutton, who was a pillar of the N.L. music industry, died earlier this month.
Classical release of the year went to Nancy Dahn and Timothy Steeves’ ensemble, Duo Concertante, for their album Maier, Franck, Schumann: Sonatas for Violin & Piano.
Global music release of the year was awarded to the instrumental trio XIA-3 for their debut album Interworlds.
