Border supermarket backs England and Scotland with half-and-half 2026 footy shirts

A supermarket is backing two countries this football season in a show of unity and rivalry.

The Food Warehouse in Berwick-upon-Tweed has unveiled new staff shirts inspired by both the England and Scotland football teams, a nod to the town’s unique position on the Anglo-Scottish border and its complex history.

Located just 4km from the border, the store is among England’s closest to Scotland, serving customers from both sides daily.

Peter Wilson, store manager at The Food Warehouse, said: “On a matchday in Berwick, you’re just as likely to hear Flower of Scotland in one aisle as Three Lions in the next, so we thought it was only right to support both this summer.

“We serve customers from England and Scotland every single day, and because we’re only a few minutes from the border you get a real mix of loyalties coming through the doors.

“The town has spent centuries switching between the two countries, so the half-and-half shirts felt like the perfect way to celebrate that unique history and have a bit of fun with it this summer.”

The shirts, which are half England and half Scotland, reflect Berwick’s historic identity.

Berwick-upon-Tweed, in Northumberland, changed hands between England and Scotland 13 times during centuries of conflict.

It was a strategically important port in medieval times, with both nations fighting for control.

England took final possession in 1482.

The new uniforms will be worn in the lead-up to the summer football season.

Staff will wear the shirts on Thursday, May 28, as part of a store celebration themed around the border rivalry.

The event will feature split decorations representing both nations.

The border town’s identity is reflected in the nickname “Borderers” or “Berwickers,” rather than strictly English or Scottish.
