OU had 15 hits. Right fielder Dasan Harris led the way with three of them. Five other Sooners had two hits apiece.
Starting pitcher Cord Rager got the win, striking out eight over six innings while allowing three earned runs and seven hits. Reliever LJ Mercurius threw three shutout innings while striking out four.
Designated hitter Michael Gibson paced the offense for The Citadel with three hits, two runs and an RBI. He hit a double in the first and later scored before hitting a solo homer in the fourth.
No. 4 VCU 5, No. 2 Tennessee 4
VCU has eliminated Tennessee from the tournament after scoring five unanswered runs from the third through fifth innings for a 5-2 lead before holding on late for the win.
Tennessee led 2-0 in the third after Reese Chapman’s two-run shot, but right fielder Travis Adelman responded with a solo shot to put the Rams on the board.
An RBI groundout and a sac fly put VCU up 3-2 in the fourth. Nate Kirkpatrick then delivered a huge two-RBI double in the fifth for the 5-2 lead.
Tennessee wasn’t done yet, though, as Stone Lawless delivered a solo homer in the sixth followed by an eighth-inning sac fly.
After that point, Tennessee had a runner on third with two out in the eighth and a runner on first with one out in the ninth but could not score.
VCU starting pitcher Eli Holbert was tremendous, striking out 10 over six frames while allowing seven hits and three earned runs.
No. 1 UCLA 6, No. 2 Virginia Tech 5
UCLA entered the tournament as the top overall seed, but the Bruins have been living on the edge in its own regional, falling to Saint Mary’s in the opener, 3-2.
On Saturday, the Bruins found themselves down 5-3 in the bottom of the ninth to Virginia Tech, but UCLA scored three in the last frame to win 6-5.
Mulivai Levu and Roman Martin led off the bottom of the inning with back-to-back home runs. UCLA then sandwiched a pair of singles around a strikeout before Phoenix Call hit a game-winning RBI single for the huge win.
Per Joaquin Ruiz of the Los Angeles Times, UCLA has now authored 29 come-from-behind victories.
The two teams combined for seven home runs. Owen Petrich, Ethan Gibson and Ethan Ball each hit solo homers for the Hokies in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings, respectively. Cashel Dugger and Will Gasparino each hit solo homers for UCLA in the fourth and fifth, respectively.
No. 1 Auburn 17, No. 3 NC State 13
Auburn, the No. 4 national seed, lost a shocker to Milwaukee 13-8 to open the tournament after falling behind 10-0 to start.
So the Tigers entered Saturday needing a win over NC State to stay alive.
This game almost played out like a slow pitch softball game, with plenty of runs and huge momentum swings.
The Tigers jumped out to their own 10-0 lead after two innings (8-0 after one), but NC State responded with two in the second and five in the third to cut the deficit to 10-7.
Then Auburn scored seven in a row with two in the fourth and five in the sixth for a 17-7 edge.
NC State immediately fought back with two in the sixth and four in the seventh, and the lead went down to 17-13. However, NC State only got one runner over the eighth and ninth innings.
Cade Belyeu and Ethin Bingaman each hit two homers for Auburn. Belyeu went 3-for-5 with three runs and four RBI. Bingaman was 3-of-6 with three runs and three RBI. Chase Fralick added another homer alongside a team-high six RBI. Chris Rembert paced the Tigers with four hits.
Designated hitter Dalton Bargo hit a homer for NC State alongside four RBI. He went 3-for-5 on the day with two runs.
