Orioles and Blue Jays lineups and notes before series opener in Toronto

The Orioles have won nine of their last 13 games, and their road trip takes them to Toronto for a weekend series.

The teams are tied for third place at 30-33 and are a half-game back for the Wild Card. They split a four-game series at Camden Yards before the Orioles flew to Boston.

The Orioles scored 21 runs in those four games.

Samuel Basallo is the designated hitter tonight. Colton Cowser is in right field.

Coby Mayo gets another start at third base against a right-hander. Jackson Holliday is at second base.

Taylor Ward is in his usual leadoff spot. He’s 6-for-9 with a double and walk in the last two games.

Adley Rutschman has reached base in a season-high 15 straight games since May 18, his longest streak since a career-best 16-game run from June 12-29, 2024. He has a .371 on-base percentage and .746 OPS during this period.

In 54 career games against Toronto, Rutschman is slashing .305/.384/.559 (65-for-213) with 15 doubles, 13 home runs, 42 RBIs, 28 walks and 39 runs.

Basallo is slashing .345/.397/.602 (39-for-113) with nine doubles, one triple, six homers, 22 RBIs, 11 walks and 19 runs in 35 games since April 20.

Basallo ranks among all qualified major league rookies in slugging percentage (second, .500), OPS (second, .842), home runs (tied fourth, nine), extra-base hits (tied fourth, 19), average (sixth, .276), RBIs (eighth, 26), total bases (eighth, 85), on-base percentage (ninth, .342), walks (ninth, 18), and hits (10th, 47).

Pete Alonso is slashing .324/.375/.521 (23-for-71) with two doubles, four homers and 15 RBIs over his last 18 games since May 16.

Mayo is batting .292 (14-for-48) with three doubles, three homers, eight RBIs and nine runs in 14 games since May 13.

Cowser is batting .333 (13-for-39) with one double, four homers, 12 RBIs, five walks and 10 runs across 17 games since May 17.

Thirty-three of the Orioles’ 70 home runs this season have come from players under 25 years old, most in the majors, according to STATS. The Nationals are next with 31.

The club record for most home runs in a season by players 24 or younger is 80 by the 1966 Orioles. Boog Powell (31) and Curt Blefary (23) led the group. Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Palmer homered off Dave Morehead on April 13, 1966 at Fenway Park.

The Orioles have collected seven or more hits in their last 10 games, the longest active streak in the majors.

Brandon Young’s 3.35 ERA is the lowest in the rotation. He held Toronto to two runs in 6 2/3 innings in his last start.

Jesús Sánchez is 5-for-12 with two doubles against Young, and Ernie Clement is 4-for-6.

The Orioles are 7-1 in Young’s starts. According to STATS, the last time the Orioles won eight of a pitcher’s first nine starts was for Chris Tillman in 2016.

Opponents are batting .125 (8-for-64) against Young’s four-seam fastball.

The rotation has registered a 2.74 ERA in the last 13 games.

Blue Jays right-hander Trey Yesavage has posted a 2.19 ERA in seven starts, and he still hasn’t surrendered a home run in 10 major league games dating back to 2025.

Yesavage faced the Orioles on May 30 and allowed one run and two hits in five innings, but he also walked seven batters.

Charlie Morton was the last pitcher in the majors to allow one run or fewer while walking seven batters on Aug. 11, 2023.

The Blue Jays and Dodgers are tied for most players on the injured list with 14.
