Officers ‘went toward the gunfire’ in police shooting that left gunman dead, Metro says

Las Vegas police on Friday released the identity of a 43-year-old man who was killed in a police shooting.

The Metropolitan Police Department also identified the three officers who were involved in the Wednesday shooting, which left Sergio Flores, 43, dead.

Multiple 911 calls alerted police to a man firing a shotgun into traffic near East Lake Mead Boulevard and North Sloan Lane, east of North Nellis Boulevard, in northeast Las Vegas at about 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, police said.

During a news briefing Friday, Assistant Sheriff Fred Haas said Flores fired nine rounds from a semi-automatic shotgun during a chaotic situation in which he reportedly shot at passing vehicles and at a utility box. No injuries from those shots were reported.

The three Metro officers involved in the fatal shooting were identified as Marcos Vega, 28; Gianni Rivera, 28; and Jhovany Romo, 33.

During the briefing, Haas played several 911 audio recordings from Wednesday afternoon.

“We have a guy at the corner of Lake Mead and Sloan firing a shotgun,” one woman could be heard saying on a 911 call, which was logged just before 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday. “He’s firing at the homeless people and dogs near the side of my building.”

Another 911 caller reported that a man, later identified as Flores, was “firing at cars.” In separate surveillance video clips shown by Metro, a man appeared to fire a weapon and several loud boom noises could be heard.

After officers responded to the scene, Haas said, Flores refused to comply with orders to drop his weapon. Haas displayed a video clip that showed a Metro officer shooting at Flores with a beanbag gun, which Metro classifies as a “low-lethal” weapon.

Flores was hit by one of those rounds, but still did not comply.

“He told officers that they’d have to shoot him,” Haas said of Flores. “He then discharged his weapon in the direction of officers, causing our officers to return fire.”

Haas called the incident a “very dynamic” situation and praised the police response.

“Officers responded without hesitation and went toward the gunfire, not away,” Haas said. “They went toward the gunfire to protect the community from someone who was endangering it with violence. I‘m extremely thankful that we didn’t have any citizens or officers injured in this because he was firing rounds through the community.”

Haas said Vega has been employed by Metro since 2020, while Rivera has been with Metro since 2021. Romo started with the department in 2023, Haas said.

Haas said an investigation showed that Rivera fired seven rounds while Romo fired five rounds. Vega fired a single round, Haas said.

All three were using police-issued rifles. All are on paid administrative leave pending a full review of the shooting and all are assigned to Metro’s Northeast Area Command.

Had Flores survived, Haas said, he would have been charged with two counts of attempted murder of a protected person, assault with a deadly weapon, resisting a public officer with a firearm, discharging a firearm where a person may be endangered, and willfully damaging critical electrical infrastructure.

The shooting was the sixth this year involving Metro officers, police said. At the same time in 2025, there had been three shootings involving Metro officers.
