Jonathon Cooper’s lawyer has strong reaction to dropping of charges against Cooper’s girlfriend

When Broncos linebacker Jonathan Cooper was recently arrested, his girlfriend was, too. The charge of criminal mischief against his girlfriend has now been dropped, via Mike Klis of 9News.com.

Cooper’s girlfriend’s lawyer welcomed the news.

“She should never have been charged in the first place and the decision today by the district attorney’s office confirms that,” attorney Ronald Gainor told Klis. “This decision really goes a long way in vindicating her and we’re very happy with the court’s decision today.”

Cooper’s attorney, Harvey Steinberg, had a much different reaction.

“White woman admits she was the aggressor,” Steinberg told Klis. “Admits she grabbed my client’s phone out his hand. Admits she went through it without his permission. Admits she threw it against the wall, damaging it. She makes allegations against my client which police don’t appear to believe. Charges dismissed against white woman. Prosecution against Black man continues. Justice in America.”

Cooper still faces multiple charges arising from the June 4 incident: second-degree assault, third-degree assault, criminal mischief, violating a protective order, and harassment via repeated telephone calls.

Cooper, a seventh-round pick in 2021 who has started 17 regular-season games for three straight seasons, was excused from the team’s mandatory minicamp. The NFL could place Cooper on paid leave when training camp opens.
