At the start of the coronavirus pandemic, when the economy screeched to a halt, officials in the first Trump administration decided to grant a reprieve. They let people pause payments on federal student loans and froze interest in March 2020, allowing millions of borrowers to benefit from one less strain on their bank accounts.
