Deborah Sengupta Stith moved to Austin as a wayward liberal arts graduate in the ‘90s and promptly fell into the city’s music scene. She spent years haunting the city’s downtown watering holes, navigating the shady world of promoters, clubs and shows and engaging in late night shenanigans. After her band dissolved in the early 2000s, she turned to music writing, building her own websites to develop her voice. In 2004, she joined the Austin American-Statesman, covering albums, bands, festivals and the intersection of art and city policy for nearly two decades. In 2024, she became Features Editor. Outside the newsroom, she enjoys live shows, thrift store hunts, gardening, and time with her husband and two kids.
