Man United icon Carrick ponders management future ahead of Hong Kong match

Manchester United legend Michael Carrick has said he is in no rush to return to management, and alongside former Liverpool player John Arne Riise, promised to put on a show for fans at the Red on Red legends game in Hong Kong on Saturday.

The pair will once again pull on the Liverpool and Manchester United colours as they feature in a team of retired legends, captained by former teammates Steven Gerrard and Rio Ferdinand, at Kai Tak Stadium.

Carrick, who won the Premier League five times with Manchester United over his 12-year stint, managed Middlesbrough from 2022 to 2025, guiding the side to the play-offs in his first season. He had recently been linked with taking over at Scottish Premiership side Rangers.

“I’m kind of chilled and calm about [returning to management],” Carrick said. “I think it’s very difficult to know when the next opportunity is coming.

“I might go back into football, there might be a job that’s right for me, there might not be for whatever reason. I’m enjoying time at home with the family at the moment, really enjoying it, actually.”

In August, Carrick’s son was part of the Manchester United academy that visited Hong Kong. Despite having experience coaching and managing at the top, he said he opted to stay out of his son’s development.
