Bitter: Hokies’ Win Showed Why College Football Is The Best

The Hokies’ double overtime win over Cal on Friday night was college football at its finest. (Jon Fleming)

On a Friday night, in an Atlantic Coast Conference game near the mountains featuring a West Coast team visiting from more than 2,500 miles away, with a shirtless band of freezing, loveable idiots cheering on from the student section and a visually-impaired crew officiating the proceedings, the Hokies prevailed 42-34 in double overtime over Cal, their players spilling onto the field to celebrate with an interim coach as fans lost their mind while jumping to a familiar and rousing 34-year-old metal song blaring over the speakers.

College football, you are the absolute best.

This is the drug. It’s why deep down, in places you don’t want to talk about, you know you can’t quit this team. You can’t quit this sport. This insane, crazy, maddening, hair-pulling, glorious, one-of-a-kind sport.

Try as you might, even with Virginia Tech’s sputtering season testing the limits of your fandom, you just can’t resist the siren song of everything college football has to offer, a quirky, far-from-polished product that is irresistibly charming.
