Gary Sinise Foundation building mortgage-free smart house for Nashville veteran

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – The Gary Sinise Foundation is honoring a local hero.
The foundation is building a specially adapted, mortgage-free smart home for retired U.S. Army Captain Leslie Smith.
Following the tragic events of 9/11, Smith volunteered to deploy. She was less than a year into her deployment when she was wounded and sent home.

Doctors then found a growing blood clot in Smith’s leg and found that it was spreading to vital organs. Her leg had to be amputated to save her life.
In addition to her amputation, Smith has near-total vision loss.
Smith later began speaking with fellow injured service members and their families, finding purpose in helping them navigate their new normal.
“We want these homes to empower. That’s what this house is going to do for her,” Gary Sinise said.
The house will be 2,900 square feet. It will include four beds and three bathrooms with an attached garage, covered porches, and smart technology.
