‘The Thiccer Kicker’ Harrison Mevis Will Start over Karty vs. 49ers, Rams HC Confirms

Los Angeles Rams kicker Harrison Mevis is set to make his NFL debut during Sunday’s Week 10 matchup at the San Francisco 49ers, head coach Sean McVay told reporters Friday.
Mevis will take the place of Josh Karty, who appeared in the first eight games of the 2025 season for the Rams.
McVay said Karty “isn’t going anywhere,” per ESPN’s Sarah Barshop.
Mevis, who is listed at 6-foot-0 and 245 pounds, was signed to the Rams’ practice squad Wednesday. He had previously earned the nickname the “Thiccer Kicker” while playing for Missouri for 2020 to 2023.
He set a record for the longest field goal in SEC history with a game-winning kick for Mizzou in a September 2023 win over Kansas State.
Mevis signed with the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent before he was waived ahead of the 2024 NFL season.
He ultimately spent last season with the UFL’s Birmingham Stallions, where he went 20-for-21 on field goal attempts.
He was signed by the New York Jets this offseason, then was cut from the practice squad in September.
Mevis’ first shot at regular-season NFL action comes after Karty went 10-for-15 on field goal attempts and 23-for-26 on extra points through the first eight games of the season.
That 66.7 field goal percentage ranks as the worst of any NFL kicker who appeared in multiple games this season.
It has also played a role in both of the Rams’ losses so far in 2025. Karty missed two field goals in a seven-point Week 3 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, then flubbed a field goal and an extra point in a Week 5 defeat by the 49ers.
McVay said in a Monday appearance on the Ram’s podcast he planned to make changes to parts of the team including the kicking room to reflect which personnel he feels “will give us the best chance to move forward.”
How Mevis performs during Sunday’s 4:25 p.m. ET matchup in San Francisco could determine whether the Rams stick with him or turn back to Karty down the stretch of the 2025 season.
