Move Over Alan Ritchson, Fans Are Flocking Back to the Original ‘Jack Reacher’ on Streaming

Tom Cruise’s 2012 thriller, Jack Reacher, is experiencing a sudden surge in popularity and has climbed into Paramount+’s Top 10 across multiple countries this week. The film, based on Lee Child’s book series, has claimed the No. 1 spot in Brazil and is trending in key markets, including Argentina, Colombia, and Mexico, with a global average position of No. 6. The renewed interest comes shortly after Prime Video’s Reacher (2022-), a modern adaptation of Child’s novels, starring Alan Ritchson, began filming Season 4 earlier this summer. The spike in viewership shows that Cruise’s portrayal of the iconic drifter still resonates with audiences more than a decade later, even as Ritchson’s take dominates the small screen.

Jack Reacher follows the titular character, a former military investigator, as he unravels a murder case involving a sniper accused of killing five people. However, when Reacher confronts the suspect, he realizes that a deeper conspiracy is at play. The film, directed by Christopher McQuarrie, features an impressive cast that includes Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, and Werner Herzog, who plays the chilling antagonist Zek. The thriller grossed $218.3 million worldwide and currently holds a critics’ score of 64% and a 67% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film’s success led to its 2016 sequel, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, which, by comparison, lags behind its predecessor on streaming. The Edward Zwick-directed follow-up currently sits in the Paramount+ Top 5 in Brazil and Italy. The second installment in the franchise earned $162 million worldwide, but was met with mixed reviews compared to the original. The sequel signaled the end of Cruise’s run as the action icon and currently holds a 37 percent critics’ score and a 42 percent audience rating.

The ‘Reacher’ Universe Is Set To Expand With ‘Neagley’

The Reacher spin-off series, Neagley, centered on Maria Sten’s fan-favorite character, Frances Neagley, wrapped up filming for Season 1 in June 2025. The upcoming show stars Greyston Holt, Adeline Rudolph, Jasper Jones, Matthew Del Negro, and Damon Herriman alongside Sten and follows Neagley as she investigates a close friend’s suspicious death.

Neagley is co-created by Reacher showrunner Nick Santora and Nicholas Wootton, who also serve as executive producers alongside Child, Don Granger. Both shows in the franchise share much of the same creative team, which led to filming for Reacher Season 4 being delayed until after the spin-off finished post-production, as per TV Line. Prime Video has yet to announce a premiere date for Neagley, but the series is expected to debut sometime in late 2025 or early 2026.

In a conversation with Collider’s Christina Radish, Sten shared her excitement about finally diving deeper into her character’s story. The Neagley lead explained that the new series will explore the former Master Sergeant’s emotional life along with her relentless drive for justice. “She has a history, and she has a life lived. She has some quite severe personal issues of her own that she’s grappling with,” added the actress. She also described the upcoming series as its “own thing” while staying true to the spirit of Reacher.

Jack Reacher and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back are available to stream on Paramount+. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
