Browns pass rusher Myles Garrett sets new team record for sacks in a season

LAS VEGAS — Browns pass rusher Myles Garrett kept raising his own bar on Sunday in a 24-10 win over the Raiders.

Garrett sacked Raiders quarterback Geno Smith with 11:27 left in the fourth quarter for his 17th sack of the season. The sack broke his own franchise record of 16, which he set in 2021 and tied in 2022.

Garrett had three sacks on Sunday, finishing with a strip-sack of Smith with 2:16 left in the game, his fourth multi-sack game of the season and third in the last four games. He has 14 sacks in the last five games.

His season total is at 18.

Garrett is on pace to shatter the single season sack record of 22.5, shared by Michael Strahan in 2001 and T.J. Watt in 2021.

Garrett’s current five-game tear started in Week 7 when he sacked Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. He followed that up with a 5-sack performance against the Patriots in Week 8.

Garrett sacked Justin Fields once in a loss to the Jets in Week 10 and then sacked Lamar Jackson four times in a Week 11 loss to the Ravens.

The accolades for Garrett, 29, are almost endless.

With his three sacks on Sunday, he joined Pro Football Hall of Famer Reggie White (19 sacks) and Mark Gastineau (17.5) as the only players since 1982, when the individual sack became an official statistic, with at least 17 sacks through their first 11 games of a season.

He is the first player since 1982 with at least 12 sacks in six consecutive seasons.

Following the Ravens game, he became the second player since 1982 with 10 sacks in a three-game span in a single season, tying Pro Football Hall of Famer Richard Dent.

He ranks first in the NFL with 120.5 sacks since entering the league in 2017.

He’s the third player since 1982 with at least 16 sacks in three career seasons, joining J.J. Watt (four seasons) and White (four).

The Browns had Smith under pressure all day on Sunday, sacking the Raiders quarterback 10 times.

Maliek Collins, who recovered Garrett’s strip-sack, had 2.5 sacks. Linebacker Devin Bush, defensive ends Isaiah McGuire, and Cam Thomas each had one and defensive tackles Mike Hall Jr. and Shelby Harris and linebacker Jerome Baker had half a sack each.

The Browns had 20 quarterback hits, led by Garrett’s six.
