Shoppers buy Thanksgiving feasts ahead of the holiday in Springfield, Pa.

SPRINGFIELD, Pa. (WPVI) — Holiday grocery shoppers were out in full force to get last-minute items for their Thanksgiving feast.

At Martindale’s Natural Market in Springfield, staff say they appreciate the holiday season.

“It’s a beautiful time of year for us because we have so much gratitude for our customers, and we also receive that in this time of year, too,” said store manager Tracy McDonald.

While the store may be busier, customers say they are happy to be among family.

“Three grown daughters in town and one of the daughters’ husbands, so that’s a real treat. They come from around the country, so that’s great,” said Liz Metzinger from Swarthmore.

Kim Alesi from Springfield is preparing to host 18 people.

“I have a daughter and grandchildren that are egg, soy, wheat, gluten-free, so it’s a challenge,” she said.

She still found what she needed, though shoppers everywhere are dealing with more expensive grocery bills this year.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics says food in general is about three percent higher than it was this time last year.

Fresh, biscuits, rolls and muffins are up about 4%, canned vegetables are 5% higher and whole potatoes are 4%.

“We are having a lot of deals right now for the holidays, so we really try to cater to those challenges for our customers and their needs,” said McDonald.

Some good news for shoppers: pie and gravy prices are about the same as a year ago, and the cost of wine is actually down about one percent.

“I’m bringing this, and we’re taking shots all night,” said Rhonda Pendergrass-Thomas, who was showing off her tequila. She opted for her favorite spirit in the spirit of the holiday season.

“Drinking with family, eating with family, laughing with family,” she said.
