Airport dress code? Passengers in North Carolina at RDU weigh in on comments about flight attire from Transportation Secretary

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — When it comes to the journey, for Thanksgiving, it’s about the destination and who you get to spend the holiday with.
“Just hanging out with family, playing cards, a few sips here and there, football, that’s it,” says Teresa Lucas, flying into Raleigh to spend Thanksgiving with family.
Passengers say it was smooth sailing into RDU the day before Thanksgiving.
But as we head into the holiday travel season, comments from the Secretary of Transportation are generating a lot of conversation.
“Just maybe dressing with some respect, whether it’s a pair of jeans and a decent shirt, I would encourage people to dress a little better and maybe act a little better. I would encourage people not to wear slippers and pajamas at the airport,” the Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy said.
Secretary Duffy claims it’s part of curbing unruly behavior and returning to the ‘golden age’ of travel, and says it will help restore courtesy to air travel.
The comments are not new federal rules and are just suggestions and advice.
Some say it’s no problem, Teresa Lucas is dressed to impress.
“I like to dress up and look nice everywhere I go, whether it be the grocery store, work, the airport, I’m not just going to be looking any type of way! I want to look nice,” she says.
Others say it’s too much.
“I don’t agree with that. I feel like you should dress how you want to, it’s your flight, you paid for it, so dress freely,” says Briana Pellew.
“I’m a tall person, so I’m an advocate for comfort, so wear whatever you want,”
But Tyra B from New York says she sees both sides – Comfort is important, but she also says you never know who you might meet in the friendly skies.
“I like to be very comfortable, but at the same time, depending on what I’m doing, I think I’m very much a conversationalist and have a conversation and be comfortable.. If the opportunity presents itself,” she says.
