Trees down: Hydro reports 5,500 without power across South Island

More than 5,500 hydro customers across the South Island awoke without power Saturday (Dec. 6) morning.
With no wind warning in place from Environment Canada, the winds whipped up enough to down trees, causing BC Hydro outages across the region.
Crews are on site or on their way for the largest reported areas including 3,300 customers out in a swath south of Langford Parkway covering Langford, Colwood and Metchosin. Nearly 800 customers in Sooke, south of Philips Road remained without power as of 9 a.m.
Winds of 30 km/h, gusting to 50 in most areas and 70 near Juan de Fuca Strait are expected to continue through early afternoon. The skies will clear with a high of 11C expected for the day and cloud and showers rolling in over night.
Low winds are expected to return Sunday (Dec. 7), in the 20 km/h range gusting to 40 km/h in the afternoon. The winds come with showers and an anticipated high of 12C.
