NFL Overreactions: Daniel Jones tears Achilles, Texans beat Chiefs

USA TODAY Sports’ Prince Grimes ‘overreacts’ to some of the best games from Sunday’s Week 14 slate.

It’s only fitting that one of the messiest prime-time games of the 2025 NFL season will have to be decided in overtime.

The “Monday Night Football” matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Chargers in Week 14 is knotted at 19 points apiece to end regulation. The game will feature another 10-minute-long period to determine whether the Eagles or Chargers win, or whether there will be a second tie this season.

Los Angeles kicker Cameron Dicker knocked through a 46-yard field goal to tie the game with eight seconds left. It was his fourth field goal of the night.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts kneeled the ball after his team’s kickoff return to take the last three seconds off the clock in regulation.

Here’s what to know about the NFL’s overtime rules in 2025:

NFL overtime rules 2025

Overtime rules during the regular season changed for 2025 to match what’s been used in the postseason since 2022. The overtime period will be 10 minutes long, with each team getting two timeouts and all reviews initiated by the booth.

Both teams have a chance to possess the football in overtime. A coin toss is used to determine who chooses to get the ball first. The only exception for both teams getting possession is when the kicking team scores a safety on the receiving team’s first possession.

After each team possesses the ball, the team with more points wins. If it is still tied after one possession each, the team that scores next wins. If the score is still tied after those 10 minutes, the game will end in a tie.

“Sunday Night Football” in Week 4 ended in a tie after the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys each scored a field goal in overtime to make it a 40-40 game as time expired.

USA TODAY Sports’ Ayrton Ostly and Nick Brinkerhoff contributed to this report.
