Traffic chaos as city centre motorists face gridlock

Drivers are facing traffic chaos across a city centre this morning.

Motorists across Canterbury are being plagued by several tailbacks heading into the centre.

Temporary traffic lights in both directions near Burgate are causing a significant portion of the delays.

The Southern Water project, which is to continue until Friday (December 12), is seeing contractors carry out maintenance on A28 Lower Bridge.

Roadworks along Nackington Road have also seen traffic lights installed near the junction of Old Dover Road.

It’s led to hundreds of motorists facing gridlock this morning, with some moving just 150 yards in 15 minutes.

Others have been forced to turn around at Stuppington Lane in a bid to find alternative routes.

St Stephen’s Hill and New Dover Road is also heavily congested, as is Rheims Way and Pin Hill heading into the city centre.

Those heading from Faversham to Canterbury are currently forecast to arrive in almost an hour.
