Star Pakistani batter Babar Azam made his Big Bash League (BBL) debut for the Sydney Sixers at the Optus Stadium in Perth on Sunday (December 14) against the Perth Scorchers, but he failed to make any significant contribution with the bat and got out after scoring just 2 runs from five balls. He was sent back to the pavilion by Brody Couch on the fifth ball of the third over of the match, which, due to rain in Perth, has been reduced to 11 overs per side.

The Sixers had high expectations from Babar, who holds the record for scoring the most runs in T20Is, but the legendary Pakistani batter struggled to make an impact.

Babar was the second Sydney Sixers batter to get out on Sunday. Before Babar, in the first over of the match, Australian all-rounder Aaron Hardie picked up Daniel Hughes’ wicket. Hughes, who made a three-ball duck, was caught by Cooper Connolly on the third ball of the first over.

Before flying to Australia to play in the Big Bash League for the first time in his career, Babar played in the T20I tri-series in Pakistan and scored 127 runs in five matches.

The star batter was not considered by the Pakistani selectors for the 2025 edition of the Asia Cup, which was played from September 8 to 28 between eight teams across two venues in the United Arab Emirates.

In that premier continental event, despite missing Babar, Pakistan qualified for the final but failed to lift the title under Salman Ali Agha’s leadership.

They faced India three times in Dubai but ended up on the losing side on all three occasions.

Babar returned to Pakistan’s T20I side in October 2025 for the home series against South Africa, where he also broke Rohit Sharma’s record of scoring the most runs in the 20-over format of the game at the international level.
