Durham Academy alumna among 9 injured in Brown University mass shooting :: WRAL.com

A Durham Academy (DA) alum was one of the nine injured in the mass shooting at Brown University Saturday night, according to the DA’s Head of School.

In an email sent to the DA community, Michael Ulku-Steiner wrote that Kendall Turner of DA’s class of 2025 was among those wounded in the shooting at the Providence, Rhode Island ivy league. Two people are dead, and an unnamed person of interest was apprehended by police early Sunday morning.

The email wrote that Turner’s parents arrived in Providence Saturday night. She underwent surgery and is now resting in critical but stable condition.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said one person has been discharged, and the seven others are in stable condition.

“We will share additional information, including ways to support the Turners, as we receive it,” the email from Ulku-Steiner wrote. “Please send prayers, love and strength to Kendall, her sister Kennedy (class of 2023) [and her parents].”

The email added that seven other Durham Academy alumni who are enrolled at Brown University are safe and uninjured.

Turner was enrolled at DA since she was in pre-kindergarten until she transferred to the North Carolina School of Science and Math at the beginning of her junior year, Ulku-Steiner confirmed to WRAL News.

She transferred back to DA at the end of her fall semester, and finished her junior and senior years at DA before graduating in May 2025.
