Sharif Osman Hadi was shot by masked attackers while leaving a mosque in Dhaka last week, and died of his injuries on Thursday while being treated in Singapore.
The 32-year-old was a senior leader of the student protest group Inqilab Mancha, and part of the youth movement that drove out former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
He was also an outspoken critic of neighbouring India, where Hasina remains in self-imposed exile.
Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, who heads Bangladesh’s caretaker government, called Hadi’s death “an irreparable loss for the nation”.
Hadi was shot one day after Bangladeshi authorities announced the date for the national election – the first since Hasina’s ousting.
Hadi had been planning to contest in the election as an independent candidate.
