Netflix bringing back ‘beloved’ sitcom after 33 years

Break out your flip-up glasses, Dwayne Wayne is back.

Netflix has ordered a sequel series to the sitcom “A Different World,” reuniting original cast members for a new installment set at a fictional historically Black college, according to Deadline.

The 10-episode series will feature Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Cree Summer and Darryl M. Bell reprising their roles from the original series, which ran for six seasons from 1987 to 1993 on NBC.

The new show will center on Deborah Wayne, the youngest daughter of Dwayne and Whitley, who were played by Hardison and Guy in the original series. Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon will star as Deborah, who is described as a free-spirited and rebellious student beginning her freshman year at her parents’ alma mater.

“These beloved characters are returning in a major way that respects their history while engaging exciting storylines that are relevant to issues of today,” showrunner Felicia Pride and executive producer Debbie Allen said in a statement.

Allen served as a producer and director on the original series. Several writers from the original series, including Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood, will return as executive producers.

Conceived as a spinoff of “The Cosby Show,” the original “A Different World” followed Denise Huxtable, played by Lisa Bonet, before shifting its focus to an ensemble model.
