The Detroit News announces plans for new Sunday print edition

Dear readers,

Exciting changes are coming to The Detroit News, so let me be the first to tell you about them. The News has been the primary source for news and information for literally millions of Michiganians since our founding in 1873, and we plan to build upon that legacy in 2026.

The conclusion of the 36-year Detroit Media Partnership will mean a new, independently operated News, which means fresh ways to deliver the information you have come to know and trust.

Among the most significant changes (and the one so many have asked about) is that The News will publish a Sunday print edition beginning Jan. 18. It will be the first time since 1989 that you will get a Sunday Detroit News filled entirely with content written or chosen by our staff. That means you’ll see more of the writers, columnists, features and advertisers that you’ve come to know and trust. All of that content will flow online, as well, so even digital-only readers will find more to love on Sunday.

That’s just the start. Among the other improvements we’re making:

  • The detroitnews.com website gets a makeover, simplifying navigation to the topics of highest interest;
  • Our mobile news app will have a new look and improved performance;
  • We’re working to update and evolve our print design, the first revision since 2009;
  • The eNewspaper, for those who like their digital news in a tidy print format, will be refreshed, as well. And of course it will include the new Sunday edition.

As with any change, some details are still evolving as we work to ensure that your subscription continues without disruption with the end of the Detroit JOA.

Of course, the core of what we do will remain unchanged. Whether we’re covering Michigan’s monumental successes or its excesses, informing you of automotive breakthroughs or failures, covering the high school team across town or the Lions’ hunt for a Super Bowl, just remember: If you read The News, you know.

Watch for more updates as we head toward this momentous change. And, as always, thank you for being a Detroit News subscriber.

Regards,
