Sam Ewing’s remarkable Christmas period continued as he guided Affordale Fury to a hard-fought success in the Grade 1 Savills Chase.

Ewing, who enjoyed a 12,662-1 treble, which included a Grade 1 triumph on Solness, at the track on Saturday, rallied the Noel Meade-trained seven-year-old home to deny the fast-finishing I Am Maximus.

Galopin Des Champs, who was making his first start of the season, looked to have a massive chance after the final fence, but he faded to finish third and was denied a remarkable hat-trick in the race.

Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Inothewayurthinkin was a huge drifter in the betting throughout the day and was beaten more than 40 lengths in ninth at odds of 13-2.

Ewing once again took advantage of a Grade 1 spare ride, as he was replacing Donagh Meyler in the saddle after he picked up a suspension for careless riding at Navan earlier this month.

As a result of his victory, Affordale Fury was cut into 10-1 (from 50s) for the Cheltenham Gold Cup in March. Galopin Des Champs was made 5-1 favourite with the same firm, while Inothewayurthinkin has been eased to 8-1 (from 7-2).
