Michigan football’s defensive coaching staff is complete.
The Wolverines officially announced their defensive positional coaches, which included two people who were not on the court next to head coach Kyle Whittingham when he was introduced to the Crisler Center crowd at U-M basketball’s win over USC on Friday.
Alex Whittingham, the son of Kyle Whittingham, and Jernaro Gilford were officially named to the Michigan coaching staff on Saturday, Jan. 3.
Alex Whittingham, 33, will coach linebackers. He’s been part of the Kansas City Chiefs organization since 2018, serving in several roles as part of the defensive coaching staff across eight seasons including two years as defensive assistant (2018, 2024), five years as a defensive quality control coach (2019, 2020-23) and most recently assistant defensive line coach in 2025.
Alex worked in conjunction with Steve Spagnola, one of the NFL’s top defensive coordinators of all time, and helped Kansas City finish the past four seasons (2022-25) in the top 12 of yards allowed per game in the league.
He walked on to Utah to play for his father (2013-17) in his playing days and appeared in 45 games.
Gilford, meanwhile, comes from BYU where he served under U-M’s defensive coordinator Jay Hill coaching defensive backs for the past decade before he added passing game coordinator to his title this past season.
Gilford helped 10 players reach the NFL, including three draft picks, as the Cougars finished three seasons with a top-30 ranking in passing yards allowed per game and four times had a top-30 mark in pass efficiency defense.
Gilford played cornerback at BYU and graduated in 2004. He appeared in 37 games for the Cougars with 28 starts, where he had 10 career interceptions and was named first-team All-Mountain West in 2001.
