Bodycam video shows moments leading up to fatal shooting of Burbank police K-9 Spike

BURBANK, Calif. (CNS) — More than a month after a beloved police dog was shot and killed by a suspect, the Burbank Police Department released body camera video of the moments that led up to the shooting.

Spike, a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois, was killed Nov. 22 during the pursuit of a suspect who was later shot and killed by officers.

The 37-year-old man was suspected of firing a handgun at police.

Officers conducted a traffic stop at 6:40 p.m. on Nov. 22 in the 2400 block of Buena Vista Street, near an on-ramp to the northbound 5 Freeway, where the suspect fled the vehicle and began running, according to the Burbank Police Department.

The suspect, identified as Jose Domingo Ayala Alas of Palmdale, was eventually located by a law enforcement helicopter. He was concealed in dense terrain near the freeway and armed with a firearm, police said.

The suspect allegedly fired at officers, striking a patrol vehicle. Alas was also accused of striking K-9 Spike.

Officers returned fire, which resulted in the death of Alas, a documented member of the 18th Street Gang with several arrests for weapons-related offenses.

Police said he was taken into custody in 2010 on suspicion of illegal re-entry into the United States following deportation.

Detectives released a debriefing video providing an overview of the traffic stop and shooting, including body-worn and dash camera footage from inside the vehicle, as well as details of the evidence collected at the scene.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting was urged to call the Burbank Police Department at 818-238-3231.
